For the past few week I have been working on a large project that will carry into next year…For now let’s say this project has a price…cryptic? yes.
The project has made me think long and hard about print media vs. electronic media. I choose a paperback book to a Kindle or electronic reader when reading a novel. But when it comes to news or business related information I would rather read it on the internet.
Why?
Basically I think it is because with news, for example, it is alive. It changes by the minute. You can refresh a site and get new news by the minute. A novel, magazine etc. is a way to freeze a situation in time. You do not have to worry about it being current to the minute, day or century. It is not an alive media.
There is a place for both types of media in my daily routine. But I am a person who has welcomed technology in my life. Not judging those who have not but I feel that if my uncle, who is in his 60’s, would get a lot of the information he wants and needs faster if he could learn to use a computer and connect to the internet.
He reads the TV Guide Magazine weekly to know about television shows. He watches local television with a converter box and rabbit ears antenna and the broadcast always tiles out because of horrible interference. He orders movies and music through mail order. The news paper is where he gets his news. Not meaning to pick on him and honestly these things might work for him in his present situation but if he were a business how could he compete. I’m just saying he could get information and things he wants so much faster if he could embrace technology, internet and electronic media.
The project I am working on falls into the discussion of print media vs. electronic media. There is a need for both in this case but if the electronic would be given a chance I would think the printed would go the way of the VCR…video cassette recorder in case you are wondering. Those are extinct you know.
I do not think electronic media will push out print media in my lifetime. I hope it never does completely but the need for electronic media sits near the head of the list well above print media.
Now if John Grisham could put out his next novel as an audio book for less than $20 I would be a happy dude. Don’t really know if that has anything to do with Print vs. Electronic or if it just gives insight to my laziness.
